Really? I’m truly excited about that…
…No really, you will be when you get the whole story on this BedHead. What do Hollywood blockbusters, Axl Rose and a famous soft drink have in common? The answer is…Francisco!
Bedhead:Francisco Delatorre
Hometown: Where else? San Francisco, CA USA
Occupation: Feature Film Visual Effects Artist
You don’t know him but you might have seen his work. Francisco helped flood New York City with tidal waves in the Hollywood hit, The Day After Tomorrow. He has also worked on the acclaimed chinese sword-fighting saga, Hero by Zhang Yimou featuring Jet Li. His latest work can be seen in the Disney fantasy-flick, Bridge to Terabithia.
What really caught my attention, aside from this and his most excellent behead was this quote from his Flickr profile:
“…you know how sometimes you want candy but you buy way too much and put the rest away in your stapler drawer or something? and then you forget about it? and then a couple days later you’re all “i need to staple something… HOLY CRAP CANDY!” That’s kind of how i feel a lot.”
Don’t we all?
What also struck me was another bedhead picture that made me kind of want to reach out and help Francisco. It seems he may have a problem with that age-old soft-drink favorite, Dr. Pepper. Now, I know I’m a pepper, you’re a pepper too and all that but there comes a point when the party’s over and if you’re still chasing the pepper dragon, you could have a pepper-problem. MB:Thanks for becoming a BedHead, Francisco. What made you want to capture these BedHeads?
FD: I just woke up one morning, and looked AWESOME. it turns out, this happens more often than expected.
MB: Nice. So how did you get in to the movie business? Did you have to do that whole casting-couch thing?
FD: I slept my way to the top. Actually, now that i think about it, that’s essentially true.
MB: Damn. You Hollywood guys have it so good. Are we getting jaded about special effects in movies? Not to diminish your excellent work and it is truly amazing - but I sometimes find that there’s not much left to really wow me; everything that’s been done so far has been incredible…Whats’ next?
FD:In terms of “new and exciting”: next up, for better or worse, seems to be stereo (3D). But now that we’re getting better and faster at VFX, I’m more excited to see effects support rather than dominate the story, like the scarecrow effects in “batman begins”, or unnoticeable set extensions that help create interesting environments (like in “The Truman Show”, or “Down with Love”).
MB: Is it true that movie CG effects are really quite easy and all you guys really do is sit in front of computers and look at porn like everybody else?
FD: No, they’re definitely not, and yes we definitely do.
MB: Who is your all-time favorite director? Or are you not allowed to say because it could keep you from getting jobs in the future?
FD: I ain’t scared of no director! Can’t pick just one, but Spike Jonze, Jean-Pierre Jenuet, and P.T. Anderson are definitely up there
MB: Yeah…That’s what I thought…Do you have a parking space with your name on it at the Paramount lot? Has anyone ever tried to park in it?
FD:I’ve never been that important. I parked in someone else’s spot once, though.
MB:You’ve traveled alot. You spent some time in China on business and other places for pleasure - What’s your favorite travel destination?
FD: I really loved Bali. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
MB: Ok, now on to this Dr. Pepper thing. Is this just a temporary soft-drink fascination or are you really crying out for help?
FD: Nope, this is a life-long love affair. As for help, I like to think the Dr and I help each other.
MB: Well Francisco, denial isn’t just a river in Egypt. I’ll just leave it at that. Have you heard that Cadbury-Schweppes, the makers of Dr. Pepper will give everyone in America a free can of Pepper if Axl Rose releases his 17-year-in-the-making, Guns ‘N Roses Album?
FD: Thank god! How else would we wash away the bitter taste of another reunion tour?
MB:Yeah, it’s true. Axl Rose visits this site all the time. Do you have anything you want to say to Axl Rose?
FD: Hey Axl, sorry about that “bitter taste” comment, it was a cheap shot. I heard your Auckland show was awesome.
MB:Well, thanks very much for your BedHead, Francisco. Also, your honesty and willingness to seek help. We all wish you the best and look forward to your movie work. Quickly, what will we see next?
FD: “Avatar” by James Cameron. I’m legitimately excited for this movie.
MB: Great! Thanks, FD…
FD: No, thank YOU MB!
